Well here is the little Oscar picture that could. The idea of a team of mathematicians working for NASA might not sound like the most exciting thing in the world, but bear in mind that their calculations were the difference between life and death when the rockets came back down to Earth.
It is also a commentary upon the treatment of coloured people at the time, you will shake your head at some of these scenes and be shocked how recently they were seen as lesser humans and made not only to ride the back of the bus, but also use separate toilets and coffee machines.
The trio of actresses Taraji Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae constantly light up the screen, especially the feisty Monae and they are joined by Kevin Costner as the up against it leader of the team.
Younger viewers will also be interested to see Jim Parsons of Big Bang Theory here and Kristen Dunst rounds out the excellent cast.
It is not all math though, there are some stunning scenes of space and even though you know how the John Glenn adventure concludes, it is still breathtaking to watch him in so much danger, solved by a piece of chalk and a big dream by a woman who was told she should not even be there.
