“What a weird few days! When I was asked to go to the RTE choice awards in CMAT’s place I was buzzing to wear a nice dress and look pretty. Little did I know how important this actually was on so many levels.
I’m so unbelievably proud of my friend Ciara. I’ve never met anyone quite like her and to say that she deserves this award is the understatement of the century.
It wasn’t until I started to read the comments online and on twitter did I realise that this was more important than the campness of sending me out to accept an award. The articles showing me with Ciara’s award were filled with comments from the alt-right pushing their ‘trans is bad’ and ‘drag queens are grooming kids’ agendas. The comments I’ve shared in this post are only a small example of the the abuse LGBTQI people are facing living here in Ireland. I am very worried for my trans family and other gender non conforming minorities. Point being representation matters and Ciara allowing me to be on that stage was important in the face of drag bans and trans hate. But they won’t dull my community’s shine!”
